New Year Holidays

From December 29th to January 3rd, many companies and government offices enter the New Year holidays in Japan. Many people take a day off on a New Year's Day(a.k.a. Gantan/元旦), to celebrate the New Year with their families. However, since the New Year holidays are the biggest shopping time for everyone and it’s a busy time for retailers. There are many supermarkets and department stores that open on New Year's Day these days. This year, however, the government is calling for longer vacations than usual, and this may affect the New Year’s shopping tradition.
