Memories of Green Island
Last year I had the opportunity to visit Green Island with Hank. Located on the Pacific Ocean, about 33km from the Taitung coast, the island is now popular as a scenic tourist destination for hot springs and scuba diving. But the island also has a dark past. From the late 1940s to the late 1980s when the martial raw period, it was a land of exile. During the White Terror era, many intellectuals and activists, who were considered political prisoners, were sent to a prison on the island, leading to difficult and painful days. The former prison is now open to the public as a museum, and visitors can learn what it was like at that time.
In Taiwan, a horror film titled "Detention" which is based on the video game of the same title was released last year, and it became very popular. The story is set in the 1960's during Taiwan’s White Terror period, encouraging young generations to have a particular interest in the history of Green Island in Taiwan on human rights issues. "Detention" is going to be shown in Japan in July 2021
